Male (see the red cheek stripe?) Pileated Woodpecker, 4.3.20
This male does most of the nest-carving work. It will be about 10 - 24 inches deep.
When I walk slowly and pause to look up and listen, I notice in myself a willingness to be curious. That curiosity shatters a bubble of distraction, and for a moment - ah, open space. Awareness heightens.
In the distance, I heard a pulsating, hollow-sounding knock. Loud like a remodeling project, and different than the tapping sound this woodpecker makes when searching for insects in trees. Then I walked toward that sound and took this photo to show you.
