Neighbor Kat recently sent photos of the mostly nocturnal Native Southern Toad. Notice the large oval gland and eye ridges. Southern Toad was in the butterfly garden behind her place, huddled inside the leaves of Snake Plant or Sansevieria (a member of the Agave family).
Some neighbors worry about the invasive Cane Toad because it is poisonous if their dog licks it. Look here to see the difference between the two. The difference briefly - the Southern Toad has ridges and a raised oval gland, and the Cane Toad has a mostly smooth head. I cannot remember seeing a Cane in our neighborhood. Nor has anyone sent me a photo of one.
The Southern Toad is an omnivore and will eat whatever it can get in its mouth: mostly insects and snails. I've seen them in my front garden when I go out at night to look up at the moon and stars.
