Ylang Ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) tree is blooming!

Something special is happening in one of the Pineneedle Butterfly Gardens. I discovered just a few days ago the first of many blooms on a Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorota) tree grown from seed and planted about 5 years ago. This is the first time it has bloomed.

Ylang Ylang means "flower of all flowers" in Tagalog, a Thai language. The oil from its flowers are used in making perfumes such as Chanel No.5.

Bits of information. (Ralph E. Mitchell, UF - IFAS blog)

Ylang Ylang is a member of the custard - family and rarely gets over 30 feet in Florida.

You can find one at Selby Gardens (parking lot area).

Produces a deep taproot.

Flowers emerge lime green and eventually change to yellow.

The fragrance is strongest dusk to dawn - it attracts night pollinators, mostly moths and beetles.

Seeds may be used for germination but may take 3 months to sprout.

Flowers produce an aggregate fruit of about 8-15 clustered berries.
